What is it? WIC is a federal program that provides women, infants and children with nutritious food and nutrition education in order to improve their health and diet. The program is for pregnant and nursing women, infants and children under age 5 who are at risk for malnutrition and poor health. You can get WIC even if you are receiving Food Stamps. What do you get? Healthy food and nutrition and parenting education. The average monthly benefit for WIC is $45 per month per family. The exact amount of WIC allotment depends on your household size and income. WIC gives you vouchers that you can use to buy food at your local grocery store. How long do you get it? Every 6 months you will have to recertify for WIC. 'Recertify' means showing the WIC office that you and your children still qualify. Your local WIC office will let you know that you are due for recertification and will schedule an appointment. |
